As we begin our journey through the book of Habakkuk here at White Oak. Each week the devotional from our book will be posted here. Our prayer is that this study will transform our hearts and minds, as we seek to be about the business of the Kingdom.
I think each one of us can understand the heart of Habakkuk. All we must do is open a social media app, watch the news, or read the newspaper and we will see wickedness running rampant. No matter how many laws we have people continue to act wicked. It truly is disturbing and heart breaking. Many who follow Christ have been praying for revival for decades and it seems that things continue to move in the opposite direction of revival. Matter of fact many I know have asked, “God what are you doing and why are you allowing this wickedness to run rampant?” Many have uttered words very similar to Habakkuk here.
One of the things that I think we can draw from this passage is the brokenness of Habakkuk to wickedness. To be broken one must be in a right place with the Lord. If we become indifferent to the wickedness, then I believe we need to examine our own hearts. Wickedness should disturb us, cause us to be broken, and call us to cry out to the Lord. Historically revival has always come when God’s people become broken over sin. We see the injustice being done and we cry out to God and desire for Him to work as only He can. This kind of crying out leads to revival (which is for the church) and revival leads to an awakening (which is for the lost).
As you spend time this week looking over these verses in Habakkuk, allow the Holy Spirit to bring you to a place of brokenness. Allow that brokenness to drive you to prayer and pleading with God to move in your life and then among His church. Ask God to revive the church and to cause the church to move on mission for the Kingdom. Use each verse to be a prompt in your prayer life and be ready to listen to how God responds to your prayers and pleas for His movement.
